This weekend will be all about the pool openings, the BBQs, the sales, and the patriotic party themes - but it's important that everyone still remembers to keep the spirit of Memorial Day alive by honoring the lives and sacrifices of U.S. soldiers and military personnel.
However you are spending the weekend, here are three ways you can easily participate in honoring the spirit of Memorial Day:
1. Take Part in the National Moment of Remembrance
By far the easiest way to give a minute of your time to honor our military personnel is to take part in the national moment of remembrance which encourages all Americans to take a moment of silence and reflection at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day. This can really be a powerful moment as well if you are with a large group. You can read more about the history of this moment on the website of the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs.
2. Purchase Buddy Poppy from the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)
You may recognize the buddy poppy being distributed by veterans at shopping centers and grocery stores. The buddy poppy is a part of a larger program created by the VFW which provides compensation to the veterans who assemble the poppies, provides financial assistance in maintaining state and national veterans' rehabilitation and service programs and partially supports the VFW National Home For Children. Hear the entire story of the Buddy Poppy Program here:
3. Donate to Organizations that help Military Personnel
Veterans and families of veterans don't get the support they need through government programs, so it is important that they can get help from other organizations. It may be hard to navigate the multitude of charity organization that help (or claim to help) our veterans, but a great place to start doing your research is Charity Navigator and Give.org.
